Filmmaking Professionals

First Light are currently looking for mentors to work on First Light funded projects. The mentor scheme aims to promote good practice of filmmaking with young people and produce the best possible films. The scheme is a training and support opportunity that runs alongside First Light Pilot or First Light Studio funding.

Projects are chosen because the application presented several of the following elements; original film ideas, plans for exceptional creative involvement in filmmaking for young people and the potential for the young people, the adult trainers and the resulting film to benefit from being part of the mentoring scheme. If you are interested in becoming a First Light mentor please email your CV to info@firstlightmovies.com or post it to First Light, Unit 407, The Custard Factory, Gibb Street, Birmingham B9 4AA by May 16 2003.

Top tips for making a film on a budget?

Tell the story. You don’t have a big budget so don’t try to make it look like a Hollywood blockbuster when you know it’s not going to look as good on the screen as it did in your head or on storyboard. Spend your resources wisely. Give time to the script, to casting, to getting a good crew. Some of the most profitable movies in history did not have mega budgets. Sure the ‘Star Wars’ series is great, I’m a real fan, but one of the most profitable films ever was ‘American Graffiti’ made by none other than… George Lucas! Spend time on logistics before you start shooting, don’t wait till you’re there. Work towards perfection nobody starts from it.
