Primary Film Online
Primary Film Online (PFOL) is a partnership project between First Light (lead partner), the UK Film Council, British Film Institute (BFI), Children’s BBCi and Creative Partnerships – commissioned by DCMS department Culture Online.
It seeks to research, develop and build a website facilitating children’s creative abilities in film and their understanding of film. The initiative is targeted at six to 11 year old children, initially focusing on the younger age group of six to nine. The website will also consider the needs of adults (including teachers, parents and youth workers) to support the young people’s learning experience.
The website design and concept will be developed to fascinate, stimulate, delight and engage primary-aged children. The site will be active, participatory and fun. User testing is being carried out by a respected market research agency, giving children themselves a lead role in developing the architecture of the website and how it will evolve. The project will have strong educational links, aiming to stimulate collaboration and joint working between the users of the site; to reach out into the community and to harness filmmaking tools to communicate. PFOL seeks to promote learning and understanding of film and media and inspire ongoing creative activity. Where appropriate, it will be linked to national strategies relating to curriculum enrichment, media literacy and the new Primary Strategy. The major launch of the website is due in early 2006.
