First Writes

The First Writes competition for Scottish 11 to 16 year olds was launched in 2002 by First Light and Scottish Screen. Three lucky (and deserving!) winners have now seen their ideas turned into reality. edit 811

Rachael Gavan seemed to have made a pretty successful 'Final Move'...

Nicole Gove's idea of finding out 'Granddad's Big Secret' (previously called 'Caveman In The Attic') is one that's a worth a look.

All three films, produced by Lucy Brown, were shot mainly in and around Edinburgh. However other locations were used, such as Callendar House, in Falkirk.

The films were shot back to back over two weeks. The first film to go into production was Final Move, written by Rachael Gavan. Directed by Graham Hunter, the film follows the struggles of the lead Patrick, whose only means of escape is through his passion for model wargames.

Next up was The Great Breakfast Race, written by Lewis Clark. Directed by Mark Ash, the film is about a small boy whose imagination helps him to overcome the grind of yet another school day.

And last but not least Grandad's Big Secret, written by Nicole Gove. Directed by Angus McPake, the film is a slapstick comedy set in the Victorian era in which Jasmine and her granny find out just what Grandad's big secret is.

A special thanks goes to Lee Lighting for their support for the three productions.

Scottish Screen and First Light would like to thank Edinburgh Mediabase, Executive Producer Mark Grindle, and all the cast and crew for all their hard work.
